Educational Records - Parent Information

The Fairfield Public Schools recognize that there are times during the course of a student’s educational career when a parent or eligible student (18 years or older) might wish to review (make an appointment with the school, and visually inspect) their educational records. Educational records include student cumulative files, special education files, Section 504 files, and health records. The Federal Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and eligible students that right. Below please find information regarding the process for requesting a review of educational records and/or a request to obtain copies of educational records.

  • FERPA (The Federal Education Right to Privacy Act) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act: Parent should make all requests to review (make an appointment with the school, and visually inspect) educational records, in writing, to the administration at the school in which their student is enrolled or was previously enrolled or to the Superintendent of Schools.
  • Once the written request to review records has been received the school will contact the parent/eligible student to schedule a date and time for the review. FERPA requires that that date/time be set within a reasonable amount of time, but in no case more than 45 days after the receipt of the request.
  • IDEA: If the student is a student with an Individualized Educational Plan or IEP the request to review (make an appointment with the school, and visually inspect) educational records should be submitted to the School Administration or to the Director of Special Education and Pupil Services as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act affords parents additional rights.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Should a parent/eligible student request records under IDEA at the school, the school will forward any and all such requests to the attention of the Director of Special Education and Pupil Services immediately upon receipt of the request.

FERPA (The Federal Education Right to Privacy Act) and Section 504and IDEA: Each parent/eligible student has the right to review (make an appointment with the school, and visually inspect) their student’s educational records. Please note that a district employee will be present during the record review).
