Concert Band
The Concert Band class includes all ninth grade band students, as well as upperclassmen. Students will receive further training in instrumental techniques, ensemble playing, and music reading. This course focuses on fundamental aspects of reading and performing all styles of band literature. This course is a prerequisite to audition for Wind Ensemble. Music fundamentals and developing the student’s musicianship are emphasized.

Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble class is chosen by audition and by the recommendation of the band director. A limited number of students will be selected on each instrument to provide balanced instrumentation. This ensemble, the most advanced of the high school bands, will study and perform standard wind ensemble literature from a variety of styles and periods.

Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble class is open to instrumentalists who have adequately developed technique on their instrument and are interested in performing jazz and popular music and a Fall audition is required. All Jazz Ensemble members must be actively enrolled in Concert Band or Wind Ensemble with the exception of guitar, bass, and piano players who must be enrolled in any year long music class. Literature for this ensemble will be selected from the standard “big band” and contemporary repertoire. It traditionally meets on Monday evenings.

JV Jazz
JV Jazz is a club that has traditionally met on Tuesday nights from 7-8 p.m. which is open to all instrumental students. If students do not play a traditional jazz ensemble instrument (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, bass, guitar, & piano), they are encouraged to learn one of these in addition to the instrument they are already studying.

All students enrolled in band must take lessons. Fairfield Warde High School provides two teachers who offer instruction on band instruments. Students may also elect to take private lessons outside the school day in lieu of our in-school lesson program should they wish to receive further instruction on their instrument.
