In celebration of Computer Science Education Week (Dec 3 – 9), our 2nd and 3rd graders at Jennings were introduced to various coding activities.
We are very lucky to have Mrs. Minogue, as our “in house” coding expert. As a computer engineer, Mrs. Minogue used coding in her profession and shared with students about the importance of coding, and why it is considered to be “the language of the future”. Our 2nd and 3rd Graders used coding activities available from Code. org and started to think in terms of coding blocks, loops, events, and conditionals.
Students were also introduced to new vocabulary words related to coding and computer programing:
- Program – An algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine.
- Bug – An error in a program that prevents the program from running as expected.
- Debugging – Finding and fixing errors in programs.
- Loop – The action of doing something over and over again
I encourage you to visit the coding activities available on the Virtual Library – Coding page. They are free for everyone and no login is necessary.
Have fun coding and many thanks to Mrs. Minogue for teaching us how to code!
