From the Principal

    Notes from Mrs. Jackson

Welcome to the school year. We are excited to begin another wonderful year with our great students, parents and teachers.

Parent Opening Letter 2017-2018

5/25/18

Our Spring Concert was a big hit this week and we enjoyed seeing so many families gathering together to celebrate with our musicians. Our students are working and playing hard as they approach the last few weeks of school. I continue to be impressed with the quality of student writing and stopped in some of our third-grade classes while they were discussing characters – very impressive! We are looking forward to next week’s Art Show and I know the students can’t wait for you to see their work displayed throughout the building. Have a wonderful long holiday weekend!

5/18/2018

The Walk-A-Thon was a wonderful way to end our week. It was great having our students participate in this event as a group and we loved seeing so many parents outside along the way cheering us on. Many thanks to all the volunteers helping with this. Our students in grades 4 and 5 are excited about Monday’s concert and we look forward to seeing many of you in attendance. Don’t forget it is an early dismissal day on Tuesday.

5/11/2018

It was a busy and exciting week at NSS! MANY thanks to the wonderful parents and PTA leaders for providing our staff with a delicious and creative Teacher Appreciation Week. The treats were wonderful and a great bonus since sharing your children with us is always a gift. We enjoyed meeting new and returning families during Wednesday’s Incoming Kindergarten Visitation as we welcomed them to our NSS school community. The Plant Sale was also a huge success. We wish all of our moms a great Mother’s Day this weekend. We are looking forward to next week’s Walk-a-Thon.

5/4/18

It was a great week that felt like summer!  Our students in grade 3 have completed their SBA testing and students in grade 4 will complete them next week.  Our students are looking forward to next week’s Plant Sale as Mother’s Day approaches. Students in fifth grade concluded their Mill River Trip and we thank our parent volunteers who volunteered their time.  The children saw many different forms of animal life. Enjoy the wonderful weather this weekend.

4/27/18

It was an exciting week at NSS, especially on Tuesday when we enjoyed a basketball game between some of our teachers and fifth graders.  Such skilled players on both sides!  It will be an exciting weekend as our students and families enjoy the NSS Variety Show.  Our students in grade 4 continued to do well taking the SBA tests.  We are also all enjoying the warmer weather and hope there is more to come.

4/20/18

It was a great week after spring vacation at NSS. Our students in grade 4 have worked hard this week as they engaged in SBA testing. I spent time in third grade during writing and was very impressed with our students as they worked together to brainstorm ideas to put within their pieces. It was great seeing so many parents at our Kindergarten Curriculum Coffee – the children really enjoyed reading to them and sharing Reader’s Workshop. Make sure to stay tuned for all the great upcoming events in the Flash. It will be an exciting week next week as we all prepare for the annual NSS Variety Show.

4/6/18

On behalf of our entire school faculty, I wish you all a happy and healthy school vacation week.  Stay tuned to the FLASH for all the upcoming activities as we enter the last three months of school.

3/30/18

It was quite a busy time at NSS with our conferences and another 4 day week.  It was great seeing so many parents during conferences and we look forward to next week’s visits as well.  We ended this week with a lockdown drill and I am very proud of our students and staff for putting safety first at all times.  We tried using our Infinite Campus system to communicate with staff during the drill for the first time. Unfortunately, some parents also received an IC blast that was only intended for staff and I apologize if that caused any unintentional upsets. We are working with our technology department to correct that moving forward.  I wish you all a wonderful long weekend and for those celebrating, a happy holiday.

3/23/18

It was a busy and productive week at NSS.  Students are really enjoying all of our March Literacy activities including spending time with author, Dan Gutman this week.  He was very impressed with our students in all grades as they participated with him in some great learning activities in our LMC.  We are looking forward to seeing many parents at next week’s conferences. We also hope many of you attend Monday evening’s safe technology presentation with Officer Guilfoyle and staff.  Have a wonderful weekend.

3/16/18

We had a great week and worked to get 5 days of activities within a 4 day week due to the last storm.  Our students are really enjoying all of our One School One Book activities and especially reading the book with their families.  Math Night was also a special event last Wednesday and it was wonderful seeing so much enthusiasm for math throughout the building.

3/9/18

It was an unexpected short week and hopefully the last storm of the school year.  We are all looking forward to getting back to school and hope we have a full five days next week.

3/2/18

March has arrived and so has our focus on literacy. It was great ending the week with our One School One Book Reveal Assembly and students also really enjoyed dressing up as their favorite book characters. Teachers enjoyed this just as much as the students. I spent time in third grade this week and was very impressed with our students’ technology skills and connections they are making to their reading. Have a safe weekend!

2/23/18

A fine week at NSS as we enjoyed the warm weather outside.  I had the opportunity of visiting orchestra classes this week and was so impressed with the many skills of our fine young musicians.  March is a busy month at NSS and we are looking forward to many literacy events and our annual Math Night.  Also, please save the date – March 26th at 7:00 – Our School Resource Officer Mike Guilfoyle will be making a presentation to parents regarding important safety reminders for your children when using the many types of technology at their fingertips in today’s world.  NSS support staff will be joining as well for additional input as we learn more about how to protect our students from the negative aspects of technology.  We will be joining with the Jennings PTA for this evening presentation which will be held here at NSS.

Dress up as a Literary Character Day!
On Friday, March 2nd we will celebrate Read Across America Day! Students are invited to dress up as a favorite literary character! In the past, we dressed as Dr. Seuss characters – but this year we are welcoming any character. Please remember as always no masks, face paint, or weapons.  We will stop everything and read as a whole school in the hallways on Friday morning. Students are welcome to bring in a favorite book from home! We will also have our One School One Book big reveal student assembly in the afternoon. It’s sure to be a fantastic day!

2/16/18

We started the week with our Kindness Assembly and all of our students participated in activities to promote being kind to others.  This is a great focus area to keep focusing on for our children.  We hope you all enjoy the long weekend.

Another four day week – oh my!  Students made the most of their learning this week and I was especially impressed with student writing work in kindergarten.  We are looking forward to taking our Kindness Pledge as we begin Kindness Week next Monday.  Don’t forget there is an early dismissal on Thursday for professional development.

2/2/18

A great and busy week at NSS. Administrators from the middle school and high school joined me in building visits to classrooms K-5 this past Thursday and I was so proud of our students and teachers. They were impressed with the level of engagement they saw and the fine reading work that included book club discussions in grade 5 and partner sharing in kindergarten. We are looking forward to enjoying the Drama Production this weekend!

1/26/18

We were all happy to have a five day week with no snow!  Our students are working hard in all areas and I was impressed with student writing work in first grade this week – so many great details within their sentences.  Next week will be a special week as our students and community enjoy the Drama Production.  I hope to see many of you there.

1/19/18

A busy and productive week at NSS!  The children enjoyed getting outside this week – many thanks for sending them in with appropriate outdoor gear.  Our second-grade teachers enjoyed spending time with parents at Thursday’s morning PTA meeting. We are looking forward to a special Jump Rope for Heart week at NSS!

1/12/18

It was great to have a five day week and the children accomplished much.  I was very impressed with student reading and writing work this week and am always amazed by the many details our youngest students add to their pieces.  Please remember to send your children to school prepared to go outside for recess.  We do our best to get them outdoors and can find that difficult if many children come without appropriate coats, hats, shoes, etc… We hope you enjoy the long weekend ahead

1/5/18

It was great getting back after winter vacation even for such a short week.  One quick reminder…when you leave the building, please don’t hold the door open for other visitors to enter. For safety reasons, it is important for all visitors to ring the office and get checked in when visiting.  Thanks for helping us ensure a safe environment for our students and staff.  Enjoy the weekend and stay warm.

12/22/17

It was a great week for the children with many special activities. A special thanks to all the parents for coming in to help with class celebrations. On behalf of our entire NSS family – I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a joyful 2018! We are always thankful for the opportunity of working with you amazing children.

12/15/17

Another exciting week at NSS.  We are very proud of our fifth grade students, Ms. Zadravecz, and Mrs. Ficks for presenting a wonderful concert on Wednesday.  Our orchestra students did a lovely job and got us in the holiday spirit. Our chorus students presented many wonderful songs and the last one, “Let It Snow”, gave us a delayed opening on Thursday!  I spent time with students in grade 4 this past week and was very impressed with their reading work as they worked on identifying important versus interesting facts when reading non-fiction.  We are all looking forward to next week and the many exciting events as we get close to our winter vacation.

12/8/17

Our students ended the week with great excitement due to the anticipated Saturday snow!  It will give them great things to write about next week.  I was very impressed with our third graders’ writing pieces this week and I can’t wait to write back to them!  We are looking forward to our fifth-grade winter concert next Wednesday and hope to see many parents at the evening concert.  Don’t forget the early dismissal on Tuesday.

Absences
If your child is absent from school, please remember to call the NSS Absentee Line – (203) 255-8416.  A recorded message will ask for your child’s name, teacher’s name, and the reason for absence (this helps us determine if it is an excused absence and prevents us from calling home to verify attendance).

12/1/17

It was a fine week at NSS following a long holiday weekend.  Although the weather has been warmer than usual at this time of year – this is a good time to remember to send your children to school prepared for chilly temperatures at recess. Hats, gloves, and warm coats are essential for outdoor play on days when the temperature drops. This is also a good time to remember the importance of monitoring technology in the hands of your children. It is difficult for all of us to keep up with the many devices children have access to (i.e. cell phones; ipads). We can’t stress enough how important it is for you to monitor your child’s use of this type of technology at home – group chats and instant messaging is beginning to have an impact on the bus and in the classroom, as children come to school upset by some of the content being shared peer to peer.  Stay tuned for more information as we keep an eye on this together.

11/22/17

On behalf of our entire school family – we wish you all a great Thanksgiving. I am so very thankful for the opportunity of working with each and every one of your children and am always so proud to be part of this wonderful NSS community. Enjoy a special weekend with family and friends.

11/17/17

November is flying at NSS. We are all looking forward to seeing many of you at the Pancake Breakfast! This was a productive week for our students as we continued working on many areas in K-5. I was especially proud of our fifth grade chorus when I visited recently. They are really working hard to make the December concert a great one.

11/10/17

We all really enjoyed our Veteran’s Day Assembly and our many veterans and guests helped to make this a special day. It is always amazing to see how each and every one of our students view this day with great respect for those who protect our country. Teachers benefited from our full day of professional development activities on Tuesday and developed a variety of strategies to implement with students in all subject areas. We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the Pancake Breakfast next week!

11/3/17

It was an exciting week here at NSS.  Our Halloween Parade was fun for all and it was great seeing so many parents outside.  Next week, staff are anticipating a fine professional development day of learning together.  We are also looking forward to honoring our Veterans!

10/27/17

It was great seeing so many parents at conference time. The children had a busy and reading focused week as they enjoyed visiting the PTA Book Fair. I am so proud that our students love books so much!

10/20/17

Another great week at NSS.  It was wonderful seeing so many parents at the first evening conferences.  The teachers had many great things to share about our fine students.  Don’t forget to get ready for October 31st and our Halloween Parade.

NSS Veterans Day Assembly
This is a very special event at NSS.  If you are new to our school community – please make sure you read through all the information in the flyer attached to this week’s “Flash.”  If you have a veteran in your family – we would love to add him/her to our NSS Wall of Honor – so please make sure to get a picture ready to send in.  More information on this great event is included in the following attachments: Veteran’s Day Commemoration and Wall of Honor.

Volunteers Needed for Veterans Day Decorations
Our Veterans Day Assembly is right around the corner (on November 8th)  and we are looking for a few volunteers to help us put up pictures and decorate the entrance hallway on November 1st.  If you are interested and can lend a hand, please email Mrs. Furey at [email protected].

Literacy Objects
NSS is in need of small objects to help us reinforce many early literacy skills! We use these objects to teach rhyme, syllables, beginning/ending sounds etc. Please send in any small objects that might be helpful with this. Old happy meal toys or little trinkets that are no longer being played with work great. Please send in things that do not have to be returned. See attached picture for examples. Place them in a bag labeled Literacy Objects – Mrs. Stiber. If you come across more throughout the year they will always be welcomed! Thanks for your help in building up our collection!

NSS Storybook Pumpkin Patch
Our storybook pumpkin patch is growing even bigger!  It’s still not too late to decorate a pumpkin to look like your favorite book character and send it in to be displayed in the library.

10/13/17

We were all delighted to have Dr. Jones visit NSS on Monday. She spent time in every classroom and was very impressed with the wonderful work students and teachers were doing together! I also had time to stop in classes during Writer’s Workshop – our young writers express their ideas so colorfully! Dress in Pink Day to support Breast Care Awareness Month was a great way to end our week and our students and staff were a sea of pink as we took pictures next to the special pink police car. Many thanks to all for participating in this!

A VERY SPECIAL thank you to Mrs. Beth Catanesi and her wonderful parent volunteers for the fine landscaping work of art they completed to make our front entrance so beautiful!

10/6/2017

Another great week at NSS filled with many wonderful activities. Dr. Jones is visiting NSS on Monday afternoon and I am looking forward to having her on site to see all the great learning that is taking place throughout the building. We are all looking forward to the October 31st Halloween Parade and more information will be sent home regarding this. For now please keep in mind that this is a special event at school – children have the opportunity of wearing costumes (we ask for no clowns or scary ones) and parents come outside to watch us all march around the bus circle together as a school family. So please mark this on your calendars.

9/22/2017

Another great week at NSS. Students are doing a great job utilizing their lunch cards and acting appropriately in the cafeteria. I stopped in classes during writing this week and was so impressed with the quality of work K-5. Many thanks for keeping our children safe during arrival and dismissal.

9/15/2017

It was great seeing so many of you at Open House night. The children loved having you visit their classrooms. I spent time in many classrooms during reading this week and was very impressed by the conversations students were having with one another about their books. Our kindergarten students are doing a great job following classroom routines and are getting very involved in the “business” of school!

9/8/2017

We are off to a great start for the 2017-2018 school year.  The children are doing well and adjusting to their school routines.  Our classroom teachers and specialists use a variety of assessments to inform classroom instruction (including STAR in reading and mathematics).  The beginning of the school year assessment window for students in K-5 is September 5-22 in classrooms and the computer lab.  Your children may have already begun taking an assessment in the classroom or the computer lab.  Your child’s classroom teacher will share assessment information with you during fall conferences.  We are looking forward to seeing many of you at next week’s Open House.  This is a great time to meet your child’s teacher and learn more about classroom routines and practices. Your children look forward to having you visit their classes.  Please remember this event is for adults only.
