Convocation 2011
On what is the first work day of the year for many staff – and what would have been the first day for students – I want to welcome you back for another school year. With no Convocation this year thanks to Hurricane Irene, the best I can do is a “virtual Convocation.” So when you get a moment away from preparing for this school year, imagine yourself in the auditorium at Fairfield Warde High School, listening to the enclosed Convocation speech.
We continue to monitor the effects of Irene on the town and the school system. As of this writing, we have three schools without power – Mill Hill, Burr and Dwight. This afternoon I should have a better handle from UI as to whether these schools will have power by tomorrow morning. If there are going to be changes in the schedule, those changes will be posted on our website by 4 pm today and sent out through our usual communication channels. Fifteen roads remain closed in town due to tree damage and nearly 6,000 homes still have no power.
I appreciate your patience as we move through the changes in our schedule necessitated by this unprecedented event. In particular, those at Fairfield Woods Middle School and Stratfield Elementary School have been extremely patient as, until very recently, those schools have been off-limits due to construction.
We will do everything we can to make the opening of school as close to “normal” as possible for students, parents and staff members. While I cannot welcome you all personally, please know that I appreciate your dedication to the Fairfield Public Schools and know that you will do everything you can to get this year off to a good start, whenever that is.
